What is geotagging?

Geotagging means embedding geographic coordinates — latitude and longitude — into a photo's metadata. Most cameras and phones write GPS EXIF automatically. When they do not, or when you need to correct a location, an online geotag tool adds that data before you publish or archive the image.

The coordinates live in EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) tags inside the JPEG file. Mapping apps, photo libraries, and some SEO workflows can read those tags without visible text on the image itself.

Why geotag photos?

Real estate listings, travel blogs, field inspections, and event galleries often need accurate location context. Geotagged photos sort correctly in Google Photos, Apple Photos, Lightroom, and GIS tools.

How to use this geotag photos online tool

Upload one or more JPEG files. If a photo already contains GPS EXIF, we display the coordinates and map pin automatically.

Set new coordinates by typing lat/lng, clicking the map, allowing browser geolocation, or choosing a preset city. Optionally add altitude in meters.

Click Apply geotag to write EXIF into every selected photo, then download individually or as a ZIP. Use Remove geotags to strip GPS metadata for privacy before sharing.

Why does this tool support JPEG only?

GPS EXIF writing is standardized and reliable for JPEG (.jpg) files in the browser. PNG, WebP, and HEIC either lack consistent EXIF GPS support or require conversion pipelines that would need server processing.

If your photo is HEIC or PNG, export to high-quality JPEG first, geotag here, then convert back only if your workflow requires it.

EXIF GPS fields explained

Latitude and longitude are stored as degrees-minutes-seconds rationals with N/S and E/W reference tags. Altitude is optional and stored in meters above sea level.

This tool writes standards-compliant GPS IFD blocks using the same structure cameras use, so desktop and mobile gallery apps recognize the location.

Where your files go

Uploaded photos are processed on your device. Download the geotagged copy when you are ready — we do not store your images on a server.
