You have outgrown your current CMS. Maybe WordPress feels slow, Wix limits customization, or Shopify no longer fits your service business. The new platform promises speed, flexibility, and a better client experience.

Then someone on your team asks the question that keeps marketing directors awake at night: “Will we lose our Google rankings when we switch?”

The honest answer: you do not have to — but only if you treat the migration as an SEO project, not just a design launch. Changing your website platform without losing Google rankings comes down to URL continuity, metadata preservation, technical hygiene, and disciplined monitoring after go-live.

At Let Start Design, we migrate and redesign sites for brands moving between WordPress, custom stacks, Shopify, and headless setups. This guide is the checklist we use before any platform change — whether you work with us or run the migration in-house.

Why Platform Migrations Break SEO (When They Do)

Google does not punish platform changes by default. It punishes broken signals:

Old URLs that return 404 instead of 301 redirects
Title tags and H1s that change without strategy
Internal links still pointing to dead paths
Missing or outdated XML sitemaps
Slower Core Web Vitals on the new stack
Structured data dropped during rebuild
Accidental noindex on production

When rankings fall after a migration, the cause is almost always one of the above — not “Google dislikes the new CMS.” Fix the signals and you protect the equity you already earned.

If traffic already dropped post-launch, read our guide on why organic traffic drops and how to fix it while you work through this checklist.

Pre-Migration: Audit What Google Actually Values

Before you touch the new platform, export a baseline from your current site:

Google Search Console — top pages by clicks, impressions, and queries
Analytics — landing pages with conversions, not just traffic
Backlink profile — URLs that earn external links (Ahrefs, Semrush, or GSC links report)
Crawl export — full list of indexed URLs from Screaming Frog or Sitebulb
Metadata inventory — title, meta description, canonical, and H1 per URL

Prioritize URLs that drive revenue and links. A 40-page site might need 40 redirects; a 4,000-page ecommerce store needs a governed mapping spreadsheet. Google’s 301 redirect documentation is the technical reference we align every migration against.

Build a URL Mapping & 301 Redirect Plan

This is the single most important step to change your website platform without losing Google rankings.

Create a spreadsheet with three columns: Old URL, New URL, Redirect type. Every old URL that has traffic, backlinks, or sits in your sitemap should map to a relevant live page — usually with a 301 (permanent) redirect.

Redirect rules of thumb

Redirect to the closest semantic match — not always the homepage
Keep URL slugs identical when possible (lowest risk)
Chain redirects (A→B→C) — avoid; go direct A→C
Retire thin pages with no traffic — 410 or consolidate into a hub
Test every redirect on staging before DNS cutover

Platform-specific note: moving from WordPress often means dropping date-based permalinks or .html extensions. That is fine — as long as every legacy pattern redirects cleanly. Our WordPress development and web development teams script bulk redirect rules in nginx, Apache, or edge middleware depending on hosting.

Preserve On-Page SEO During the Rebuild

A new design should not mean new SEO from scratch. For each priority URL, carry forward or improve:

Title tag (50–60 characters, primary keyword intact)
Meta description (unique, compelling, ~150–160 characters)
One clear H1 aligned with search intent
Logical H2/H3 structure
Internal links to related services and blog content
Image alt text on hero and product visuals
Canonical URL pointing to the preferred version

Use our free SEO Meta Tag Generator to draft clean head markup before import. If you rely on rich results, rebuild JSON-LD with the FAQ Schema Generator or product schema tools — see also how to boost SEO with schema markup.

Technical Checklist Before Launch

Run this list on staging, then again on production within 24 hours of launch:

Robots.txt allows crawling of public pages
No accidental noindex on live templates
HTTPS enforced; HTTP versions 301 to HTTPS
XML sitemap submitted in Search Console
HTML sitemap updated (see site map page)
Google Analytics / GA4 and Search Console verified on new property
Core Web Vitals acceptable on key templates
Forms, checkout, and thank-you pages tracked
hreflang intact (if multilingual)
Structured data validates in Rich Results Test

Google’s SEO Starter Guide remains the best sanity check for fundamentals — especially crawlability and useful content.

Platform-Specific Migration Notes

WordPress → Custom / Next.js / Headless

You gain performance and design freedom but lose the plugin ecosystem. Replicate critical SEO plugins (redirects, schema, sitemap) in code or your new CMS. Export posts, categories, and media with URL references intact.

Wix / Squarespace → WordPress or Custom

URL structures often change dramatically. Crawl every live Wix URL before canceling the subscription — once the old host goes dark, redirect testing becomes impossible without archived crawls.

Shopify → WooCommerce (or reverse)

Product URL patterns (/products/handle vs /product/name/) need meticulous mapping. Preserve product schema, review markup, and breadcrumb trails. Our ecommerce development team treats product redirects as a launch blocker, not a post-launch task.

Rebrand + platform change together

Double the complexity. Follow 10 steps to rebrand without hurting SEO in parallel with this migration checklist. Domain changes require Search Console change-of-address and extended monitoring.

Launch Day: Coordinated Cutover

Pick a low-traffic window (often Tuesday–Thursday morning in your primary timezone). Sequence matters:

Freeze content edits on the old site
Deploy production build with redirects live
Update DNS / point domain to new host
Smoke-test top 20 URLs from your mapping sheet
Submit new XML sitemap in Search Console
Request indexing for homepage and top landing pages
Monitor server logs for 404 spikes

Do not delete the old hosting environment for at least 30–60 days. You will need it for redirect debugging.

Post-Launch Monitoring (First 60 Days)

Rankings may wobble briefly while Google re-crawls. Your job is to catch fixable issues fast:

Weekly: GSC coverage report, 404 errors, redirect errors
Weekly: Organic sessions vs pre-migration baseline
Bi-weekly: Top query rankings for money keywords
Once: Full crawl compare (old vs new site)
Ongoing: Fix orphan pages and update internal links

If indexed pages drop sharply, you likely have redirect gaps or accidental blocking — not a “Google penalty.” Fix technical issues first before rewriting content strategy.

When to Hire an Agency for Platform Migration

DIY migration works for small brochure sites with clean URL structures. Bring in specialists when:

You have 100+ indexed URLs or active ad/SEO campaigns
Ecommerce, memberships, or custom apps are involved
Organic traffic is a primary revenue channel
Your team lacks redirect/server access
You are rebranding and migrating simultaneously

Let Start Design offers website redesign and SEO services as a combined migration package: discovery, URL mapping, build, redirect implementation, schema, sitemap updates, and 30-day post-launch monitoring. See our portfolio and client results for examples of redesigns that preserved — and improved — search visibility.
